Most healthy adults with adequate jawbone density are good candidates for implants. The key requirements are: healthy gums free from active periodontal disease, sufficient bone volume at the implant site, and no uncontrolled systemic conditions that significantly impair healing (such as poorly managed diabetes). Smoking is not an absolute contraindication but does reduce success rates and slows healing — we discuss this candidly with every patient. The dental implant process typically involves multiple visits. The initial visit includes consultation and planning, followed by implant placement. After a healing period of a few months, during which the implant integrates with the jawbone, the final crown is placed. The exact timeline can vary based on individual cases.

Osseointegration is the biological process by which the titanium implant bonds directly with the surrounding jawbone. Titanium has a unique property — it is accepted by bone as if it were a natural structure, and over time the bone grows into the microscopic surface of the implant, creating a bond that is effectively permanent. This process typically takes between 8 and 16 weeks in the lower jaw and 16 to 24 weeks in the upper jaw, where bone density is naturally lower. During this period a temporary restoration is worn, and normal daily activities can continue without restriction.
Dental implants are cared for in almost exactly the same way as natural teeth. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush, floss or use interdental brushes daily, and attend routine dental check-ups every six months. Unlike natural teeth, implants cannot develop decay — but the gum tissue around them can become inflamed (a condition called peri-implantitis) if oral hygiene is neglected. Keeping the gum tissue healthy is the single most important factor in long-term implant success.
For single implant cases, most patients require two trips: one for implant placement and one (typically three to six months later) for crown fitting.
